Why Ashlee’s Moving to Melrose Place

It’s all about baby Bronx for Ashlee Simpson-Wentz.

A friend of the singer/actress tells PEOPLE that the new mom has been looking for a way to balance work and family life. Now she’s found it as the newest star on The CW’s updated version of Melrose Place, which starts filming in April.

“She wanted something stable so she could be close to her baby,” a friend tells PEOPLE. “She was specifically looking for something in television as her next step, that filmed in Los Angeles, so she wouldn’t have to be away from Bronx.”

Simpson-Wentz, who got her first big acting break seven years ago on TV’s 7th Heaven, will play a small-town girl trying her luck in L.A. and will display a “disarming naiveté [that] masks the calculating, shrewd sex kitten within,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

Simpson-Wentz, 24, and three-month-old Bronx are currently on tour in Europe with Pete Wentz, 29, and his band Fall Out Boy.

Adds the pal: “Music is still a passion but [Ashlee] felt this was the best thing for her and her family at this point in her life. She’s really excited about Melrose Place.”

Ashlee speaks about MP

“I’m thrilled to be joining the cast of Melrose Place and I look forward to being a part of its new generation of residents,” Simpson-Wentz said in a statement.

A source close to Simpson-Wentz tells PEOPLE the actress “wanted something stable so she could be close to her baby.”

“She was specifically looking for something in television as her next step that filmed in Los Angeles so she wouldn’t have to be away from Bronx,” the source says. “Music is still a passion but she felt this was the best thing for her and her family at this point in her life. She’s really excited about Melrose Place.”

She and her rocker husband, Pete Wentz, will also guest star on the March 18 episode of CBS’s CSI: NY as a Bonnie-and-Clyde-like couple who get caught up in a drug deal gone bad. “I wish I got the chance to be murdered or rob a bank but I heard the make-up is much longer for that,” Wentz, 29, recently told PEOPLE.

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz To Move Into Revamped ‘Melrose Place’

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz has confirmed to MTV News that she will be taking up residence on the revamped “Melrose Place” this fall.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the cast of ‘Melrose Place’ and look forward to being a part of its new generation of residents,” Simpson-Wentz said.

Although she didn’t comment on what role she will have on the show, reports from The Hollywood Reporter and EW.com have the onetime “7th Heaven” star playing Violet, a small-town girl who is very manipulative and uses her girl-next-door charm to get what she wants. The role is being described as similar to the Sandy Harling character from the original series.

Simpson-Wentz joins Katie Cassidy, who will play determined publicist Ella, and Michael Rady, who will play aspiring filmmaker Jonah, on the upcoming series. Original “Melrose Place” resident Heather Locklear is also rumored to be joining the cast to reprise her role as Amanda Woodward. “Both sides are talking,” reports EW.com’s Michael Ausiello. “It’s looking good [that Heather will come back].”

In addition to the rumor that Locklear will be back for more backstabbing fun, “O.C.” alum Mischa Barton is rumored to make her return to the small screen for “Melrose Place.” If she does, EW.com reports she’ll play the good girl — either med student Lauren or schoolteacher Riley.

“This is news to me,” a rep for Barton told MTV News. “She’s just returned from Europe and heading there again for contractual commitments, but I know she has been reviewing scripts for pilot season, though I haven’t heard of anything specific.”

A New Tenant on Melrose Place: Ashlee Simpson-Wentz

The real-estate market may be sagging in real life, but it’s looking up on TV: The CW has reportedly signed a deal for Ashlee Simpson-Wentz to move into Melrose Place.

The singer-actress, 24, plans to return to TV as a small-town girl trying her luck in Los Angeles, according to Entertainment Weekly. Ashlee Simpson-Wentz moves into “Melrose Place”

The countdown to the inevitable Pete Wentz cameo has begun!

Multiple sources confirm that singer-songwriter-sometime actress Ashlee Simpson has become the latest tenant of The CW’s refurbished Melrose Place.

The onetime 7th Heaven star will play small-town girl Violet, a character whose disarming naiveté masks the calculating, shrewd sex kitten within. In other words, the little tramp’s Sydney.

Simpson joins a cast that so far includes Katie Cassidy (as ambitious publicist Ella), Michael Rady (as aspiring filmmaker Jonah), and, if there is a God, original Melrose icon Heather Locklear, who would be slipping back into Amanda Woodward’s office microminis. “Both sides are talking,” whispers my Melrose mole of Locklear. “It’s looking good.”

Melrose 2.0, which is considered a lock to land a spot on The CW’s fall sked (most likely on Tuesdays after 90210), is being shepherded by Smallville’s Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin. Oscar winner Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) has been tapped to direct the pilot.

Now for the big question: Did Simpson score the part that Mischa Barton had been circling? My sources tell me no. That means the ex-O.C. siren is in talks to play straight-arrow med student Lauren or revoltingly sweet schoolteacher Riley.
